History
LSAMP (originally the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation) started at WSU in 2009 through a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) with a mission to support STEM students who identified with backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented in STEM fields. We were partnered with four additional universities to create the Pacific Northwest (PNW) LSAMP Alliance, comprised of University of Washington, Portland State University, Oregon State University, and Boise State. Additionally, partners included select community colleges in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. Each University took turns hosting an annual conference for STEM undergraduates, with WSU hosting the regional conference in 2022.
Initially, WSU LSAMP was administered by the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture (VCEA) and housed within Daggy Hall (now home to the VCEA Wellness Center). While most of the LSAMP program funding came from the NSF LSAMP grant, the program was also financially supported by the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences.
In August of 2018 transfer of the administration of the LSAMP program to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education began. By 2022 the physical space for WSU LSAMP was moved from Daggy Hall to the more centrally located Smith Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE). Support for the LSAMP program from the Office of the Provost, the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences continued.
In 2025, all NSF funded LSAMP programs in the United States were defunded.
The current LSAMP program was reenvisioned in 2025. The program was renamed “Leadership in STEM through Applied Mentoring Programs”. The reenvisioned program aims to provide academic support, professional development, mentoring, and community building to all STEM majors on the Pullman campus. The STEM Center in CUE 403 remains a welcoming location for all STEM majors. The program is supported by the Office of the Provost, the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences.
